Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Royal Rumble edition of The Master’s Dojo!! I of course am your host, The Master of Puppets. Today I’ll be going over The Royal Rumble Pay-Per-View and all of its goings-on. Let’s get it started.
It had been a really bad week for me (I was diagnosed with Diabetes this week), but the Royal Rumble honestly gave me a few hours to forget all my troubles. Even the first match for the ECW championship wasn’t completely disappointing to me. I thought Christian vs. Ezekiel Jackson was just going to suck. It wasn’t all that bad though, despite the predictable ending. Big Zeke showed off his strength and Christian showed off that he can actually wrestle. It was exciting enough to keep me watching, but it did have a fairly predictable ending. One quick note, if they’re going to keep the third brand around in WWE, they should change the name. It hasn’t been extreme since the first year it was on. Give it a name that doesn’t imply that it is extreme. I mean, they still call it “The Land of Extreme” occasionally. Anyway, moving on.
Miz vs. MVP wasn’t too bad either. Miz has been on a roll as of late, well, he’s been on a roll for a while now. Teddy Long gave him that surprise of having to fight MVP while he was talking to Cryme Tyme about trying to exchange Khali’s Rumble spot for a kiss with Tiffany. Anyway, Miz was able to come away with another win and kept his United States Championship. I don’t like Miz, but I don’t know if I’m totally sold on MVP either. I want to be, but I’m not yet. We’ll see though; hopefully MVP or someone else can with the title so we can see a bit of a rivalry. Speaking of rivalry, two matches later in the night Mickie James and Michelle McCool got into it for the Women’s title. McCool and Layla had been making fun of James for a while, but Mickie was able to come out on top this past Sunday. I want to think to myself that these two are the few remaining somewhat legitimate female wrestlers in WWE. Unfortunately, I can’t necessarily back that up because I haven’t watch women’s wrestling in weeks, including this match. Was it a good match? I’d like to know, because maybe there could be a few good women’s fights here and there. Well, probably not. But anyway, Mickie James is your new Women’s Champion.
Before the Women’s title match we saw Sheamus defend his WWE Championship vs. the Viper, Randy Orton. The match seemed to be back and forth at least somewhat. Several times the two wrestlers wound up outside the ring. The really interesting part of this match, however, was the end. Cody Rhodes, being the member of heel Legacy, decided to come in and help out Randy. Well, the ref caught it, and announced that Randy was disqualified, Sheamus won and would retain his title. Randy was obviously pissed, and he went after Cody. The Ted DiBiase showed up and tried to restrain Randy. Orton then attacked both DiBiase and Rhodes. Well, after forcing them up in the corner of the ring, Shaemus blasted Randy. It seems as though the end of the Legacy Stable has finally, finally come. I honestly hope DiBiase and Rhodes start to fight in Singles matches rather than being focused on Tag Team matches and interferences. And I’m sure Randy will remain in the title hunt for now, and as much as I don’t like him, I really wished he would win the belt, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. Anyway, Shaemus is still WWE Champion.
Right before the actual Royal Rumble, we saw The Undertaker, the World Heavyweight Champion, take on the Ultimate Underdog Rey Mysterio for the WHC. This match was probably closer than it should have been, although I must say I was entertained. Rey was able to deliver the 619, but it was the Undertaker who eventually picked up the win after a huge Last Ride to Mysterio. Rey was able to hit the 619 twice though, which was impressive. But now you have to wonder what might happen next to these competitors. Rey Mysterio and Batista will probably fight again for the Number One contender’s spot for The Undertaker’s title at No Way Out. However, I don’t see Undertaker losing at No Way Out. Or at WrestleMania, but I’ll get to that later.
Alright, on to the MAIN EVENT!! The Royal Rumble, on of the greatest nights of the year for a wrestling fan. And the Royal Rumble match, of the matches that is most looked forward to during the year. This year’s match started with Dolph Ziggler and Evan Bourne. However, I thought things really started to get interesting around the time #17 Matt Hardy entered. Once Hardy ran in he was quickly eliminated by who I thought would win, Kane. But then Michaels entered the ring. Then Cena entered the ring. Before you know it Cena, HBK and Triple H were all in the ring together. The Heartbreak Kid and Triple H pulled off a good showing of teamwork when they both eliminated Drew McIntyre, but then Shawn Michaels delivered Sweet Chin Music to his partner and friend Triple H, showing that it is every man for himself in the Royal Rumble. Then Big Show and Mark Henry enter and start fighting. As they are both hanging on the ropes, R-Truth runs in and knocks them both over the top rope, and I honestly thought “Wow, is WWE going to push R-Truth? Is he going to get close, maybe even win the Royal Rumble?” Well, my thoughts were put to rest when at Number 27, Kofi Kingston entered and took out R-Truth. I was hoping that Kofi was going to win at that point, but he was soon eliminated by John Cena. Then it was #28 Chris Jericho. And then it became crazy in the ring.
Unlike the usual surprise entrant at Number 30, this year’s surprise entrant came in at 29. That entrant was Edge. Yes, Edge. I was going crazy, swearing at the screen and what not. “ITS EDGE!!!” was the gist of it. Anyway, Edge came in and immediately speared Cena. Edge also was able to eliminate Y2J during his time in the ring. It was time for #30 to enter, and The Animal ran down to the ring. Soon, there were four men in the ring: Shawn Michaels, John Cena, Batista and the returning Edge. Shawn and Edge ended up both barely hanging onto the ropes and pulling themselves back up onto the apron. Shawn delivered a nasty Sweet Chin Music to Edge, which knocked him back in the ring. But the Batista came up and knocked Shawn to the floor. Michaels’ dreams of facing The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVI are now gone. And then there were 3. Cena got a little payback on Batista for the 2005 Royal Rumble (thanks to Michael Cole for that “insight”) and eliminated him. But soon after Edge eliminated the man he hates the most, John Cena, and subsequently became the winner of the 2010 Royal Rumble.
That Rumble was epic. I was literally on the “edge” of my seat the whole time. Ok, that was a terrible pun, my apologies. But seriously, Edge coming back and winning really surprised me. I didn’t expect him to come back this early from such a serious injury. That was a great moment, and I’m sure many of you will agree with me that it is great to see Edge come back. Another thing that surprised me was Shawn Michaels eliminating Triple H. I know that they always talk about every man for himself, but teammates often help each other out (like last year, when DiBiase and Rhodes and Orton were in the final 4 of the Royal Rumble, with Randy Orton eventually winning the match). I honestly thought one of the two guys from DX were going to win, possibly the two of them being the last two survivors. But that is why this was such a great Royal Rumble; there were surprises all around. Michaels eliminating Helmsley, Edge returning and subsequently winning, Shawn Michaels breaking Stone Cold Steve Austin’s record for all-time Royal Rumble eliminations, ECW having keeping me tuned in. It was a really entertaining night in my opinion. The only thing that could have made this better, in my opinion at this point, is a surprise entry by Rob Van Dam, but having that last year was great too. Also, it was interesting to see just a few guys at a time in the ring towards the end. In previous years we’ve seen tons of guys in the ring at once, but for several periods of time there were 7 or less people in the ring, and I thought that was interesting. All in all, I really enjoyed Royal Rumble 2010.
Well ladies and gentlemen thank you for reading again this week and be sure to read again next week. Until that time, I am The Master of Puppets, the dojo is closed and I AM OUT!!
