Straight Blazing: ECW Report for 07/14/09

Back to home

A Swaggaless ECW is like UFC without GSP... Dont Make Sense

Ladies and Gentlemen welcome back to this edition of Straight Blazin! This week we will be of course covering the all new, and totally boring ECW for the date of 7/14/09! But before we dive headfirst into the bore fest that is ECW, Lets take a look at this past weekends UFC PPV which I previously predicted in my article last week. And for the record I DID like ECW and where there were headed until it did its job of making stars and the top two brands took them all.. I hope they can make a new crop before I lose my mind.

Now UFC 100 was the highest buy rate, reportedly, in the history of the UFC. It was headlined by the World Heavyweight Unification match featuring Brock Lesnar v the only man to beat him in MMA, Frank Mir. Going into this main event contest Brock Lesnar was considered by many, including this reporter, as the underdog. While I was rooting for Brock my money was on Frank Mir to capitalize on a mistake again and win. This wasn’t the case as Brock Lesnar absolutely DESTROYED Frank Mir and got a TKO victory in the 2nd round and became the Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion and then showed a level of disrespect and acted like a total heel and also bashed one of the UFC sponsors. He later issued an apology for his actions, Because Dana White told him to.

Before this main event was two under card matches that were a stacked contest and this reporter went 1 for 2 on. Michael Bisping v Dan Henderson was pretty disappointing even if you were rooting for Henderson, Who scored the KO victory in the first round. The match was absolutely a dominant showing by Henderson and his right punch made my jaw hurt, So I feel for Michael Bisping. The other fight showed exactly why Georges St Pierre is one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world as he simply decimated Thiago Alves for all 5 rounds of their contest and retained his title by unamainous decision. Congrats to both Henderson and GSP, as well as Brock Lesnar! Now on with the show!

ECW this week is airing live after a cool little show called Warehouse 13. I watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it for any one with nothing to watch on tues nights at 9pm eastern. Now onto ECW where they show a highlight package of last weeks main event where Christian beat Koslov and became the number one contender for Tommy Dreamers ECW title. They hype the ECW title match occurring in 2 weeks at Night Of Champions, Which I’ll be at :D. New ECW intro showing all the new talent ECW has and it shows a lot of Shelton and Ezekial as well as Gregory “Hurricane” Helms!

Christian kicks off the show and the crowd is hot and on their feet cheering on Captain Charisma! Christian will be in a match against Shelton Benjamin to kick off ECW. It looks like they are going to be starting off with a bang and trying to make a good impact. Christian and Shelton Benjamin are both EXCELLENT superstars and they should be able to put on one hell of a match.

Some couple of memorable spots in this match were an amazing inverted back body drop where Shelton sent Christian sailing in the air only to land on his face, truly brutal looking and changed the momentum of the match early. Christian nailed a spinning forearm smash to Shelton Benjamin and he was looking to have the upper hand until Christian pauses and looked as Vladimir Koslovs music rang over the PA system and distracted Christian who was on the top rope. Christian gets dropkicked to the ground and Koslov stands over him and then heads to the announce table as we get our first commercial break!

We come back and get Vladimir on commentary which was kinda entertaining but also reeked of utter failure at the same time. He claimed that Christian won by mistake and talked in broken English and some Russian and really was just confusing. Meanwhile in the ring Christian is getting pummeled down by Shelton who is playing a very good ground game and being a total heel focusing on certain parts of Christian such as his arm which Christian and the announcers are selling as hurt. Vladimirs English gets better as the match goes on for some reason and Christian finally gets the advantage!

Christian nails a reverse DDT and then goes up to the top rope to perform something and Shelton performs his infamous leap from the mat to the top rope without using the turnbuckles and slams Christian to the mat hard. Christian almost hit’s the KillSwitch after reversing a shoulder block and then out of nowhere Shelton reverses the KillSwitch into a Pay Dirt and picks up the win! Shelton Benjamin beats the number one contender for the ECW title.. Might I add that Koslov looks plain EVIL when he is smiling and happy. Excellent little match with a kind of shocking ending and some amusing stuff on commentary.

Match Rating:

3/5

Match Review:

Nothing amazing and not exactly what it could be.. But a shocking ending, amusing commentary from Koslov, and a decent wrestling match make this a good start off match. Glad to see Shelton with a push maybe as well!

Before we go to commercial again we have Ezekial cutting a standard little heel promo saying he is the best and all the time off did him well. Also saying that hes the real deal on ECW and he is going to prove why. I expect another Jobber match up next.

Back from commercial and Paul Burchill is standing in the ring with Katie Lea, who is still sporting the Sara Del Rey face makeup look, and they are awaiting his opponent as Yoshi Tatso’s music hits and he comes out to a very decent pop from the crowd! Might I add that Katie Lea Burchill was looking pretty damn good on the outside rooting on Paul Burchill. It was a solid back and forth match for the beginning part. Yoshi nailed quite a few good kicks to the body and one to the head and he has the momentum. He goes for a springboard SOMETHING and slips and falls off the rope. Burchill tries to help him sell it but it came off looking very sloppy. One short minute later Yoshi was kicking the side of Burchills head in and picking up the victory in a nice little textbook match. Nothing really to get hyped over but it was a nice filler match and Burchill did a good job of putting over Yoshi Tatsu.

2/5

Match Review:

A little short and nothing special.. I love seeing Yoshi put over and seeing Katie Lea is always a plus, But nothing amazing.

Back from commercial and we get to see that ZZ Top will be the guest host for Raw next week and Stryker makes a lame joke and we go to Tiffany in the back. She is speaking with Tyler Something and he is talking about how great he has been doing on Superstars and she agreed and he seems to be making his ECW debut next week.. SPEAKING OF ECW DEBUTS..

A Shattered Dreams Production

GOLDUST BABY!!! Awesome.. I have always loved the Goldust character and Dustin Runnels is one of the most under appreciated wrestling minds there is. He has an amazing mind for gimmicks and is a solid talent who always does what it takes to make it. He will be making his ECW debut against Zach Ryder and he looks to be in the best shape of his life.

Goldust looks really good in the match and also does a decent job of selling for Ryder and making him look good as well, which is probably his main function in this match. A few moves to knock the other to the outside throughout the match and some close counts and about 5 minutes in it’s a nice fast paced match up that is getting some steam rolling. A few close counts from Goldust and he seems to have the momentum until Ryder slams his face into the turnbuckle and Zach Ryder nails the Zach Attack and picks up the win over Goldust. I still dislike Ryders gimmick and that finisher.. So maybe with a little work and a new finisher and I can actually like some of his match ups. Good match and a solid push for Ryder as of late.

Match Rating:

2/5

Match Review:

Love seeing Goldust in the ring and Zach Ryders push grows.. Was a decent enough match and did its job.

Raw Rebound up next, For the results I would check out Vince’s article on Raw! Excellent read and worth the time spent. But I do have one thing to say about Monday Night Raw.. SETH GREEN WAS EPIC WIN!!

Please Don’t Try this at home vignette in the commercial break. Still stemming from kids hurting themselves lately doing wrestling moves..

Next match we have, after a promo hyping Hurricane Helms saves the last few weeks of random backstage people, is Sheamus v a local jobber again. It looks like they are doing a good job of hyping Sheamus as a typical European heel and since this is his 2nd week against a jobber, it looks like he will get a solid push. Good for him as he is decent on the mic and average in the ring. Sheamus with a short match on this jobber but he has a good showing and delivers the rock bottom into a knee finisher he has for the victory and his AWESOME theme music kicks in. Sheamous could be a very good talent if pushed right but I don’t see him going past mid card and a possible mid card title, like IC or US, if they are in Ireland or something.

Match Rating:

2/5

Match Review:

Too short sadly, I hope for better things from Sheamus as he gets people to work with..

Commercial break is up with little time left and they are hyping the Main Event of Tommy Dreamer v Vladimir Koslov. I don’t see that match going long at all but this has been one JAM PACKED ECW tonight. Lots of matches and continuous story building. They show a ad for “The Abraham Washington Show” on next week with Christian and Dreamer.. Remind me to go to the bathroom during that..

Next up is the main event of Christian v Vladimir Koslov! Dreamer gets a decent pop from the crowd but nothing like Christian got and the main event is underway! Some average mat wrestling and some reversing of takedowns and headlocks is what this match started out as. Dreamer hit’s a flying clothesline. Koslov nails some typical strong offense including some Sambo head strikes and a Sambo suplex showing his Mixed Martial Arts background. Koslov nails a head butt into Dreamer when he attempts another flying clothesline, then he nails the Iron Curtain and picks up the win over Tommy Dreamer.

Match Rating:

1/5

Match Review:

Squashing the Champion… Hmm.. Bad booking.. And the crowd was DEAD.. Like EXTINCT

After the match Koslov goes to keep pounding on Dreamer and Christian saves the day but he ends up “accidentally” hitting Dreamer and taking him down while he was getting up. Koslov ends the show with him smiling on the top of the ramp I guess proving he can beat anyone in ECW.

Show Grade: B-

Couldnt agree more about Dustin. Goldust is a definite win. Black Reign was also a great character in my opinion, even if it didnt go over as much as TNA would've liked. Good article JB.

Nice article as usual - I think Yoshi Tatsu was going for the Springboard Spinning Wheel Kick that he used on Shelton last week. It looked pretty good then, but I thought at the time that it could easily go wrong... And there you have it. Burchill did a good job covering though.

About Sheamus, is it me or does he just look too happy to be a heel? I dunno, there's just something likeable about him. I thought it was a fairly nice show anyway, except for the champion squash, several decent matches other than that

i love how WWE is pushing guys like Koslov as better than everyone, i just think that the champion especially a face champion should not be beaten, before ppv, especially a face champion

I couldn't stand to read it. Don't get me wrong, it was probably good, but it isn't my work. My brain doesn't work that way.

2 Things: One - Christian v Vladimir Koslov! It was Tommy. :P. Two - That makes two of us going to Night of Champions!
