Real Wrestling? Is there such a thing? |
 |
|
Sup peeps? It’s that time again. Time for another one of the untitled articles. This is gonna be my last rant article before I get back to feeding you guys some delicious random thoughts. Last week I asked you too send me questions, and only one person did. So as promised I will answer his two questions. 1. Do you like Miz or Morrison better? Why? I like Morrison better, because frankly he is more talented, and he’s funny as hell. 2. Do you like Rhodes or DiBiase better? Why? I like Rhodes better. I don’t know exactly why I just kind of do. I think DiBiase looks too much like a combination of my 5th grade teacher and Randy Orton. Both can have bright futures though. Well now that that’s out of the way I suppose I should get started on me rantings. This weeks is a very special rant. The subject of the day is the reason wrestling has developed its very own sub culture in society. The reason it is so reviled by the naked eye of the masses. The reason you could go on for days on about whether it’s a sport or not. Because it’s fake. A fact. A fact not a thought. This fact devastated many of us as kids, and yet some of us didn’t get into until they were like 25, and already knew. So today I will examine why it is that the same ingredients for years, have elicited so many different reactions.
I still remember the first time I heard it was fake. I was six, and on the playground at summer school. A friend and I were talking and we started talking about wrestling when another kid on the jungle gym said “Wrestling’s fake.” This statement wrought my brain with a confusion that persisted for many years to come. This was simply impossible. How could it be fake? I see them bleed, I hear them scream, and I see them go through tables and the such. So I said the most logical response I could think of, “No it’s not,” I retorted to the boy. He said that if the wrestlers actually did those moves they would kill each other. I disregarded the claims as childish stupidity and went about my life. Throughout the years there were of course many references made to wrestling being fake. I attributed it to adult cynicism. Like how it was crazy that none of the adults believed in Santa or Magic. As I got older it became increasingly easy to see how everything was done. Through many internet sources it slowly unraveled before my eyes. It left an odd feeling in my stomach. I dreamt of going undefeated an entire career and holding every title. Soon I began to compromise. Well maybe they could have an undefeated wrestler; I just won’t hold all the titles. Maybe I’ll have one loss, after I’m a legend. Maybe a few losses, but only because they cheated. I compromised more and more until I realized I will lose when they need me to and win when they need me to.
When I first found out I was afraid it would frighten me away from wrestling. I didn’t grow up watching fake wrestling. I grew up watching real wrestling. Only when I found out did it become fake. How would this affect me? How would knowing my childhood ideals of grandeur were fake affect how I saw the product that largely defined who I am. Yet every week I found myself continuing to tune in, and I found myself equally entranced by it, but in a newer way each week. I appreciated it just as much, but now in a different way. Soon I appreciated it more than I ever had. The skill it takes to do some of these moves is incredible, let alone the skill it takes for anyone to do them and tell a story with them. How to use big moves in conjunction with small moves, and vice versa. How a story began, progressed, ended, and transitioned was something I could already appreciate, and now I could even apply it to wrestling. It’s amazing really. I am in love with a product that really isn’t even the same thing I fell in love with in the first place. I was looking at from two different angles. Two different perspectives, and yet I still wanted it more than anything else. I guess it’s almost more of an accomplishment when you can go out there out there and prove yourself in that way. I mean in a sense anyone can go and be unbeatable if it was real. To go out there and be the best in a world where there will be people who try to hold you down, where you have no control over a lot of things that impact your career, where the words you speak, the way you make the subtle movements in the ring, and even the way you lose can determine how successful you can be. To live in that world and still be able to call yourself the best; that takes some doing.
Now obviously everyone here loves it. We realize the athleticism, and skill it takes to do these moves properly. We know the little intricacies that make a punch a punch, and a bump a bump. We know why the little things happen. Now, why can’t everyone else? Wrestling has the worst reputation of just about anything else in the world. Somehow we got right up there with Nazi’s and pedophiles. At least that’s the way it seems. People look at us like we’re idiots when we tell them we like wrestling. Think about it. When you tell someone you like wrestling for the first time a few things can happen. First, they go “cool,” and are done with it. Two, they say “No way, me too,” and you have a new friend. Three, they go “You know wrestling’s fake right?” or some variation of that phrase. They say it like it’s the first time we’ve heard it in our lives. And the way they say it.. That condescending tone in their voice. Like they know some big secret. Like they figured it out by themselves. They tell how it looks so fake, and how dumb it is. Let’s face it most of the people who criticize it for being so “obviously fake” wouldn’t have a damn clue if they didn’t hear it on TV or if daddy hadn’t told them when they were still watching Barney at eight in the morning. Wrestling’s been worked for a long time, but there were certain circumstances where they would just wrestle. This was in the early 1900’s. So let’s say the modern professional wrestling industry started with Orville Brown becoming the first NWA Champion in 1948. In that case 90% of people who were not involved with the wrestling business had no idea it was fake for a good 45 years. Explain that jackasses.
We know all this, and yet when we try to explain it we start to sound like idiots. We try to tell them how much skill it takes to lift a 250-pound man, then they say that the other person jumps. Well yeah they do, but what exactly is the trick to holding them there? We try and try to explain to make these people understand how hard it is, but they have that one trump card that will halt almost any argument regarding it. They simply say “Well it’s fake,” and they’re right. Once they pull that crap it’s almost impossible to come back from it. It’s hard to sound convincing telling someone how tough something is when you admit it’s fake. And if you deny it’s fake you just sound like a doofus.
Then there’s that word. “Fake,” some would argue just how accurate of a description this is. We know the outcomes are determined, therefore it’s fake. Right? Well should we run down the list of injuries these people have that suggest otherwise. Hulk Hogan doesn’t have a plastic hip because it’s “fake.” Shawn didn’t leave the business for four years because it’s “fake.” Mick Foley isn’t missing half of his ear, most of his teeth, and can’t hardly walk because it’s “fake.” Chris Benoit did not kill his family because it’s “fake.” The dangers are real. They are clear, and they are present. They aren’t landing a trampoline. The grimace on their faces when they land is more real than you know. Try and see how many kids have been permanently disabled because they were screwing around in their backyard. There is always a chance that something will go wrong, and when you put on a show 300 days out of the year something is bound too. Now before I move onto the next section I must ask people to refrain from using the Owen hart tragedy as an example of how wrestling isn’t “fake,” the accident had nothing to do with a match. While we’re on that subject anyway, I would like to remind everyone that there are people out there who think Eddie Guerrero and Owen Hart are sipping Pina Coladas on a beach somewhere. That’s part of the extent of the stigma wresting has.
Watching wrestling with someone like that is even worse. I was over at a friend’s house, and he had a friend over, and that friend’s clingy girlfriend was there. She does not like wrestling. I was really the only wrestling fan in the room, but the other guys they at least understood. They were cool. So I tell my friend SmackDown is about to come on. He says I can I change the channel. I walk over to the TV. and she asks “What are you gonna watch?,” I of course answer, “Wrestling.” That elicited this response, “Ugh, oh my God.” She’s lucky she’s a friend’s girlfriend or she’d have ran out of teeth. The whole time I’m watching she won’t shut up. Benjamin cuts a promo. “Graham how long does it take the wrestlers to memorize there lines, oh my god he didn’t even touch him, this is so fake.” This is coming from a girl who always has her nose either stuck in a Twilight book, or some half assed manga. I’ve got my fantasy world, and she’s got hers. Yet for some reason she’s got to declare war. It really does amaze me how disrespectful people can be for no reason. Calling them actors, saying there moves couldn’t hurt anyone. You tell someone you watch wrestling, and they go “Why don’t you watch UFC or something like that?” Show of hands, how many of you watch MMA in addition to wrestling. Most of you, at least occasionally. And half the people who say that can’t tell me what MMA stands for. Hell this site reports MMA news, which I don’t really understand, but I don’t question it either. Don’t get me wrong I respect the hell out of most MMA fighters. If you take out all the loudmouth little punks who haven’t done anything there whole lives except get drunk and get in street fights then you have some of the greatest athletes in the world.
I can’t remember who said it, but I read once that a wrestler said “For a non-believer no explanation will do, and for a believer no explanation is needed.” Where does that leave us. We obviously aren’t believers, because we know wrestling’s a work, but you can’t call us non-believers, because we love this sport. Yeah, I call it a sport. I don’t care what Vince calls it, this is the toughest thing on the planet to do. Lawrence Taylor said after he wrestled Bam Bam Bigelow that wrestling would be like playing a football game every night, and that’s exactly what they do.
I don’t know really what the reason is that I love it. The talent, the moves, the characters, the story, the fans cheering. I can’t explain it. People tell us it’s fake, and we don’t care. It’s fake compared to what else on TV.? CSI? House? Lost? All of those are fake, nobody gives them crap. Survivor? Dancing with the Stars, The Bachelor? Please, reality TV my ass. There just as fake. As conceited as it sounds I think in a sense it’s jealousy. You have actors who play characters on Lost, and then those actors go on Dancing with the Stars. Not the characters from Lost, the actors. When you watch wrestling you aren’t watching actors. You are watching the very same people you see walking down the street. That’s what makes it real, that’s what makes ours a uniquely different subculture. Different from any Star Trek cult, or comic book convention, or D&D play session. You can’t last in our world without living in it. You hear the passion with which some of these veterans talk about it, and that’s real passion. They mean every word of it. It’s got to be some kind of magic. It’s what entranced us as children, and made us analyze as adults. It’s why we will continue to ask for a “Hell Yeah,” It’s what makes us ask if you can smell what we’re cooking, it’s what will always make us twirl our wrists and cup our ears, and leg drop a couch cushion in our living room, and why we will forever strut, style, profile, and WOOOOOOOOOOO at the top of our lungs until the day we die. We are wrestling fans, and we always will be. We have nothing to be ashamed of we only have something for others to be jealous of.

Let me just tell you this: Injuries aren't fake. When they go under surgery, it isn't fake. When they go away for months to heal or to recover from the pain and suffer they go through every single night just to make us, fans, happy, it isn't fake. When they walk the ramp down to the ring, they know they're going to get hurt, they're going to sweat, they're going to get out of there absolutly tired, but they get in the ring and do their best for the fans. The pain is not fake, but the happiness, the passion, the respect, the tenacity, the resilience, the feeling of being complete in the ring, it is NOT FAKE. Now you tell me what's fake about wrestling.

dude...relax...it's not life or death...it's all a work. i understand what you mean...but saying you'd punch a chick out makes you seem like a mass douche. if you like it great, and if others don't...who cares to put it very nicely. That's all you needed to say. wasted a lot of time buddy.

Great article dude. You know what I say when I get hit with the "it's fake", I say its scripted, not fake. The broken collar bones, the concussions, the hospital visits, the stitches, the falls, they are all real.
As for your friends girl, I think I would have called her out on the subject right at the beginning. The easiest way would have been to ask her if she liked Titanic. If yes, you say you know its fake. Just because Jack and Rose were fake doesn't mean that the Titanic and her sinking weren't. Its the same with wrestling. Just because the outcome maybe predetermined, doesn't mean that the moves and the damage done aren't.

wrestling is fake, it is scripted and the moves are harmless, only because they know how to pull them off, i DDT'd sum dude and it opened him up, 1 DDT, the only wrestling move that probably isn't fake is the back hand chop, iv seen documentaries on how all the moves are performed to not be harmful, but still they are very dangerous to perform

Great article you took it to a new level there in that article.
I agree with you about wanting to punch a someone for their reaction towards wrestling. But what they do not realise that every sport or reality tv show can be scripted. Hell i have seen a boxing match where the guys have took a dive without the fist going near them. I like watching UFC and MMA as much as the next guy but i prefer wrestling. Wrestling has that special something that other sports dont have present. i cant really explain it but it does.

Gratz. This is probably your best article. While reading it I was feeling like I was getting in your shoes because I also thought that wrestling was real when I was a kid and I had the same disappointment. Thanks for sharing the feelings. Maybe that's what made this article so damn good

Times have changed in Wrestling... Let me give you a 'ol school wrestling lesson. Back in the 1800's wrestling started as a side show at fairs. Going strong till now. But what you may not know up until the 1970's wrestling was real. And what I mean about real is wrestlers finishing hour long matches with broken limbs. You faught till you couldn't. The longest match was a little over 4 hours set back in the 60's, the winner, won the match with a broken arm. Like boxing at the time peolpe wanted to see fights, thats why way back in the day Boxing had 100 rounds. The point is somewhere around the 70's decided to entertain the fans instead of showing them a brutal sport. That person that help bring wrestling to what it is today is none other that Vince McMahon Sr. So don't feel bad if its all work now. Not to sure if youtube has any 'ol school matches from back then but look them up. A Warning though, some matches are complete boredem b/c they drag on for an hour(normal time back then). And they do show bones being broken, but offer some moves that haven't been seen for a while meaning the whole match not just here and there.(piledrivers, ddt's, ect.) pretty boring but brutal if you like that stuff, sorry for the long comment but had to put my 2 cents in on this...

this comment to the guy "fake on" WOW!!!! you must real no nothing about wrestling. About 80% of the submission moves come from Jutisu (not sure if spelled right) some of the throws come from Judo and natrualy the kicks are karate, the rest are invented by a wrestler. Point being. the submission wrestlers are no different than MMA they just know how to do it to make it look real and not hurt anyone... So let me tell you this.. Let me slap a sharpshooter on you, and not the ROCK' or BRETT HART, but STING... Sting sits on your back and Ive seen first hand on what it can do, lets say it hurts, b/c your back dont bend that far backwards, or how about a ankle lock and any one would do. do you know it takes about 20 lbs of pressure to break your ankle so yeah come with it then yo.. Yes it's all a work until someone hits you for real.. Things get personal and sh@t happens. As TAker how them Mable(big daddy v) busted his eye socket on a normal closline, and I have the article that he was interviewed in to prove that one. Why am I defending this, I am a retired wrestler now owner. Say wrestling is fake to any wrestler and see what happens... ALA MAD TV and the Brett Hart beat down on a cast member. If you think that was a work your wrong Brett was really angery...

we are on the same page, literally!
well, it isnt THAT fake. Its just that the results are predetermined. All moves are REAL! that is why they keep telling us "dont try this at home or at school". Been listening to that phrase since this first time i watch WWE.
Do people know what WWE stands for? World Wrestling ENTERTAINMENT! Its ENTERTAINMENT!!! so live with it. Sit back and enjoy the show. I like to think of the wrestling shows like some sort of drama, but the way they solve their conflict is by beating each other up, and the ultimate goal is to get the championship and be famous.

Hmm... this raises a good point... is wrestling real?
Of course it is, or at least the being smashed down to the mat or through a table is. You try picking the splinters out afterwards if you disagree. Of course some of it is scripted but executing those moves needs skill. Personally, I don't care if its fake or not, the wrestlers in the ring need as much talent and skill as they do memory in this business. As Jay said, WWE is Sports ENTERTAINMENT. If you aren't liking what you see, there are about 1000000 other channels or shows for you to watch.

Well written... and a good subject, too!
Wrestling is full of glorified stuntmen, really. I think if the men you see on TV didn't have wrestling, they'd be in hollywood jumping off buildings for the sake of the art. Wrestling is organized chaos, a controled fire, and any other oxymoron you want to throw in there. Whenever I ehar some say "it's fake" I say "so are movies and plays and any other show you watch". Even reality shows are fixed to a point. All i'm saying is this; there's a reason they put the "do not attempt at home" before the shows.

its a sport and its acting at the same time, lets see one of those actors from holywood step into a ring, bad idea. but the wrestlers we love can go into holywood and be just as good as full-time actors. Your right, their jelous that the thing we love to watch is live a drama, an action, and every other type of movie roled into one. something no one else has. that is why its call sports entertainment

The cuts, the blood, teh sledgehammers, the chairs, it's all fake. I mean, if the blood was real, they could spread diseases. So of course it's fake. No one know's how they act the other stuff, but that'd fun to figuire out. Wrestling is something for pleasure, not to figuire everything about it.

This is a great article. It took me a long time to come to terms that wrestling was fake. I had almost come to terms until Brock Lesner Superplexed Big Show off the top turnbuckle and the ring collapsed. I am 24 now. 25 in July. I come to terms that wrestling is scripted. But the moves the perform is real. Has anyone wondered why only Kane and Undertaker perform Tombstones. It is cause they are the only wrestlers in the WWE allowed to. That move and other variations of the belly to belly piledriver are actually banned in a lot of wrestling leagues and even in 1 state. I forget which one. The reason being if not done properly it can seriously injure someone. That is how Owen Hart injured Austin. He messed up doing a Reverse Piledriver aka Belly to Belly Piledriver. The moves are real. People can get hurt. My only real complaints about the WWE anymore though is that the wrestling looks even faker then it used to and that they went to PG. It is sad to know that there will be no more Bra and Panties matches, no divas in playboy, and actual wrestling action will not be as intense as it once was.

i agree with Jay. Have you seen WM 22? Look at the Edge vs Mick Foley match. Both of them literally came out of that match with thumbtacks in their face and torso. I do not see any MMA or UFC people guys doing that. I know its scripted, learned when i was 11.
Wanna know what i say? show her the Mutoh match which invented the Mutoh scale. Then the Edge/ Foley WM22 match. Is that not better than a manga? I don't see the people in Twilight getting put through a flaming table or bleeding their heart out or getting hundreds of tacks in their bodies. Also, I don't see vampires lifting 250 lb men. Take that Twilight.

Great article. If someone says it's fake or predetermined, I can just say "Yeah, but don't you think it would hurt to go through a flaming table? And on moves that don't hurt much, don't you think that it's really difficult to sell it?" Seriously people, most of T.V. is fake, why not have people getting hurt while it's being fake?... And if someone says "Those moves don't even hurt"... Well, I would say what I've already said in the quotation above. I also too remember my progression through realizing that it's fake... So, the wrestling shows have talent, humor, fans, good storylines, and Hulk Hogan, all regardless of fakeness... So good article!

I agree with you. Wrestling is not fake as in, people get hurt really bad doing it sometimes. Plus, it was built on top of catch wrestling, which is real. MMA owes a lot to it, despite what the MMA fighters say. They fight in a cage which was an obvious ploy to get the wrestling fans into it. I still watch wrestling and I teach MMA. Wrestling is real, the scripts are there, but the bumps are real.
