A Bite of the News: Rumble Recap By Lionman The Royal Rumble is over and circumstances have changed, we have seen brotherly betrayal out of jealousy, a match with a very odd ending to say the least, and somebody going to Wrestlemania 25. All in all, we have just one PPV separating us from the Granddaddy of them all, Wrestlemania. Matt Hardy Vs. Jack Swagger
This was a hard fought match and both sides contributed equally. Unfortunately there was a winner, and the winner was not someone of my preference. Many of you could guess that this means Jack Swagger won this match, if that is what you are thinking then you are correct. I believe that this match was meant to make Hardy have a face change, after the match he was “upset” enough to have a tear role down the side of his face. He looked like a depressed man; someone who has lost a large part of himself and feels he can’t get it back.
Jack Swagger does have a very bright future in the WWE, I have said that many times. I did not think he would win and continue his reign as ECW champ at the Royal Rumble, but he did and I now am jumping onto his bandwagon, whether I like it or not. The one thing I would wish to know is how he would fair on Smackdown or Raw. ECW just doesn’t have it anymore, having the ECW championship now is liking having the Intercontinental championship when Santino had it, yes Santino as in the man who spent one and a half seconds in the ’09 Royal Rumble. What I mean by that is the ECW championship is now a joke, it is lower then the USA championship and it is a brands main title that is saying something. I’m really just hoping we get to see Swagger play with the big boys on Monday and Friday.
John Cena Vs. JBL w/ HBK
No big surprise which wrestler the fans were pulling for in this match, right? Wrong. Half the crow was chanting lets go Cena, while the other half was chanting Cena sucks. I’m guessing this was because HBK was with JBL. I’m not saying I don’t normally hear those cheers, but I don’t hear them to that extent often. Let me walk you through from the time JBL big boots the ref… Cena and JBL clothesline each other, they are both down the ref is knocked out cold outside thing ring. HBK comes in and waits for them both to get up. HBK superkicks JBL, then while Cena’s celebrating HBK superkicks him too. HBK then drags JBL over Cena and a ref comes running down the ramp, Cena kicks out at two. Then we wait a while, JBL misses a clothesline from hell and Cena reverses it into a F-U or whatever it’s called. Then Cena wins.
What HBK did was at least controversial. Nobody knew what JBL whispered to HBK at ringside, which makes this even more suspicious. I would not think that HBK would superkick his boss without being told to, but then again he is the Showstopper, the Main Event, he is HBK. Basically saying who knows what in the world he is going to do besides himself.
We will be in for a treat on Raw finding out whether HBK will get his payday or not, and what JBL’s reaction is to not becoming the World Heavyweight champion. So look forward to a whole load of chaos served up World Wrestling Entertainment style.
Beth Pheonix Vs. Melina
This was the most boring match out of all the matches at the Rumble. There was no flavor to it; there just wasn’t anything special. We saw two feuding diva’s go at it ending with what seemed to be the impossible, but anything’s possible, at least that’s what Disney says.
I was very impressed with both of these wrestlers showings, the Glamazon continued to show how dominant and strong she is and Melina showed us a nice variety of moves. I was very impressed in Melina’s counters, and I have to say it was disgusting how flexible Melina is, her own leg was hitting her head, what in the world is up with that? This brings me back to the Santino split moment. Back to the match; the pin Melina had on the Glamazon was incredibly set up and well executed. I honestly could not ask more from this match even if it wasn’t that good, it exceeded expectations.
Jeff Hardy Vs. Edge
The no-DQ setting took me and many other WWE fans across the globe off guard, even if we were happy about the rule change. Clearly this rule change helped Edge because he had Chavo at ringside, even if Chavo turned into a mess at the top of a broken announce table. And once again, the ultimate opportunist, Edge, came out on top.
When we saw Matt Hardy come out with a steel chair in hand and he headed straight for Vikki, we were all extremely excited. Then he got into the ring and gave Jeff the chair, Jeff placed it under Edges face and Matt had a chair in his hands. Matt swings the chair and Jeff and Edge gets the win and becomes the new WWE champion.
Why would Matt cost his brother the WWE championship? That my friends, is a good question. What I would find as a logical answer would be Matt being upset that his younger brother had a major title and he didn’t. But there has to be a reason that is deeper then just jealousy. If there isn’t then why would Matt be so jealous of his brother that he would cost him the WWE championship? When you go that far it isn’t just sibling rivalry, it is like a war. The only in family thing I can compare it to is a bad divorce. There is one good outcome of Matt’s actions, and that is him wanting to become the Hardy Broz again, which would make me feel like the happiest man on the face of the earth. Chances are that wont happen, so we end up finding out that it was Matt who caused Jeff all this suffering and we get to have a brother vs. brother feud. Which will be very, very, very interesting. Right now I have to predict a ladder or TLC match at Wrestlemania between Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy. I have a feeling that will end up being a match for the ages.
The Royal Rumble
The outcome of this match was so disappointing to me. I thought someone like Big Show, Kane, The Undertaker, or even Rey Mysterio was going to end up being in the main event at Wrestlemania, but no, the so called “every man for himself” thing was not true, it was legacy face off against anyone the chose, and that is why Randy Orton won the 2009 Royal Rumble. He was diabolical and planning, the luck of the draw by having all three legacy members come out around the same time was a bit of a help too, but otherwise it was just the scheming of Randy Orton.
I wont lie because this was a surprise to me, what will be an even bigger surprise is what the McMahon’s will do to Orton on Monday night Raw this week. Will they take away this shot and give it to Triple H? That is very much a possibility. Will Randy Orton keep the shot at Wrestlemania? Chances are that’s what will happen whether we like it or not. Whether or not any of my guesses were right, the show must go on, and at this current moment Randy Orton is in the main event at Wrestlemania against either Jack Swagger, Edge, or John Cena.
R.V.D. Returns
To say this was a surprise would be completely messed up. Rob Van Dam returned from whatever he was in and I have the feeling he is going to be back for a while. What impressed me the most was his similarity to CM Punk with both of his legs, they are incredibly agile and well balanced. I would love to see CM Punk defend his title against RVD because we would be seeing legs flying all over the place like they were arms.
If there is one PPV that even comes close to the magnitude of Wrestlemania, it is The Royal Rumble. It is just incredible how one match changes the stature of a whole PPV and that is exactly what the Royal Rumble match does for The Royal Rumble. This years Royal Rumble was filled with heels winning three out of the 5 matches, but it was still filled with excitement. I personally wish more faces’ would have won, but it isn’t my choice. Now the waiting begins, for Wrestlemania, and then some 10 months later, next years Royal Rumble. But for now we have our sights set on two tons of steel, lets see how much fun we can have with that.
